Reminder: The Sleeping Dons

I don't want to kick up another firestorm in the comments section or anything, but since we featured The Sleeping Dons performing our song of the week a couple of weeks ago, I figured some of you might want to go see them in person.

The Sleeping Dons, Sean Richardson (left), Jay Lukens and Deron Sodaro will be performing during happy hour (7:00 PM to 8:00 PM) at The Vandalia Lounge every Wednesday in July, starting tonight. I'll be there to check out one of the most charismatic bands in Charleston, and you might want to go hear the guys, too.

Correction: The start time for the happy hour sets by The Sleeping Dons is 5:30 PM, not 7:00. They're still playing until 8:00 PM. Sorry about that guys, your second set sounded great tonight!

Does the latest wave of new bands -whistlepunk, Sleeping Dons - with old 90's music veterans from Mother Nang, Strawfysh, et al signify a resurgence of new music in Charleston?

I think not - just a re-hash. Not unlike the one we saw in the early 90's with Carpenter Ants, etc. Folks who couldn't make it anywhere else so we're stuck with them.

Seems to me I remember Sean Richardson wiping the dust of this dirty little town from his feet and moving to Seattle to take the Northwest by storm.

Things must not have worked out - he's back and now we must suffer his foolishness.

He is a snappy dress though! Does this meet approval with the Vandalia Lounge dress code?

Hells yeah! These guys write songs, and they can sing and play their instruments. What would you rather hear, lame heavy metal or crappy hip-hop? How about country?

Did this guy steal your girlfriend or something back in the old days?

That's Charleston--capital city of haters.

Oh, I forgot, happy, shiny people only!

Not haters, just some comment and criticism.

Are you his girlfriend or something?

Hateful comments and no real criticism, you mean.

Why the jealousy? Could your band not get a gig back in the days when Nang and Strawfyssh ruled this town?

I'm not a girlfriend, just somebody who likes new and interesting music. I can't understand why somebody would lash out against the first really exciting thing to happen musically in this town in over a decade. This is the first time in months that bands tht appeal to me manage to get any coverage in the local media, and the first thing that happens is that people start bashing them, just because they got a little attention.

We get that you don't like them. What's the reason? You seem to have an agenda of some sort. Some kind of grudge against Sean Richardson, for starters. Do you make music, or are you just a desktop critic? Maybe you don't like their music, but your comments indicate that you have other reasons.

You say you offer "comments and criticism".....where's the criticism? I just saw unnecessary, hurtful comments--nothing constructive, and no real point other than the chance to hide behind a fuzzy ID to bash someone for doing something creative.

My comment about Sean and the manner he left Charleston in the 90's comes directly from the arrogance he showed while leaving. Remarks about getting out of this hick town and to a place where they would respect his talent were made to no end.

These bands have little or no talent - the song lyrics are non-sensical and the music is just plain bad.

Was then - is now. Same people - not my fault - I'm just expressing my feelings.

No grudge - I'm just not going to juice all over myself because these boys are playing again. I think the big deal is only being made because there is so little happening here.

That's not a slam- it's just the truth. So the Gazz has to exploit every event ot its fullest and make it seem like a big deal - be it music or yellow t-shirts on Capitol Street.

I'm not trying to be hurtful - just expressing an opinion and making observations. Are you too thin skinned to take it?

That's funny. I call you on having an agenda, and you basically 'fess up, then call ME thin skinned? It looks like you're the person getting all defensive. I was simply disagreeing with you and calling your motives into question. Looks like I called that puppy right.

Yes, you expressed your opinions. You also copped to having a long-held grudge against Mr. Richardson. Can you see how that might color your opinons somewhat? Maybe it even renders them invalid and laughable.

I found out about these guys by reading this blog. I took a chance going out to see them and loved their sound. I enjoy Whistlepunk, too. I'd buy their CDs if they had them.

It's fine for you to say you don't like their sound. Everybody has their own tastes. Yours is obviously in your mouth. some of us don't care for screaming heavy metal hair bands or boring old jazzboes. What you say about them having no talent, your bitterness is showing. Your comments about the Gazz are just ridiculous. I don't think they've even mentioned any of these bands in their newspaper. One blog--my favorite of the Gazzblogs, but still only one blog--mentions a band a tiny handful of times and the nutties come out of the woodwork to cry about it.

I wasn't around this town back in the times you talk about, so I can't say how people behaved back then. I can say that they put on a hell of a great show with great music and they sure seemed like down to earth guys to me. Maybe they were jerks back then. Looks like they grew up. Too bad you never did.

hmmm.... from Buddhist chanting to threats of violence.

Something must have hit a little too close to home.

I wonder what?

Being unfamiliar with anyone except Rudy in this string I don't know who's right and who's wrong but it certainly seems to be an extreme reaction.

Just my humble opinion.
